Once upon a time there was a baker.

scan00031Her name was Betsy. Betsy loved to bake bake bake. Particularly sourdough baguettes. As a matter of fact, Betsy’s life of baking was perfect, but she wondered how else she could help her community. (After all, serving great bread is a wonderful thing to do!) Not being one to loaf around, Betsy emailed sharna@peaceofthepie.com and explained her dilemna. How could Betsy’s love of baking benefit her community?

We asked her what else she felt passionate about. She said she wished more disadvantaged inner city kids could go to the university of their choice. That’s when we came up with the  Dough For College Program. Here’s how it works:

Everytime somebody buys one of Betsy’s best baguettes or cibattas or tomato tarts, she donates 25 cents from that sale to the Dough For College Program. Peace of the Pie then helped Betsy find the right partner, a school district supervisor, who started a scholarship contest for Betsy’s cause marketing gift.

Peace of the Pie also sent press releases to the tv stations and twittered about Betsy’s program. People saw and heard about it. Not only did they want to try Betsy’s baguettes, but they also couldn’t wait to help Betsy raise college dough. Why? Because it made them feel good.  So good in fact, they told their friends about it. And everything, like one of Betsy’s fresh baked bagels, came full circle.

Betsy’s market share increased. And nearly 5K was raised by Betsy’s boulangerie for a first year scholarship. “Not a bad start!” we say. “Aw shucks. It was the yeast I could do,” replied Betsy.

The previous tale is purely fictional to illustrate the point that business and non-profit work together everyday to make the world a better place. What is your passion in business? In non-profit? In life? Peace of the Pie wants to know. Contact sharna@peaceofthepie.com
